Zone One Brass at the Regionals...


Towards the end of March Rory played Euphonium in Zone One Brass as they took 2nd place at the London & Southern Counties Regional Brass Band contest. The band has now qualified to attend the National Brass Band Championships in October at the Royal Albert Hall, on their home turf. For the second year running Rory won the John Luckett Euphonium award for best euphonium player. Switzerland

Over the Festive Season Rory travelled to Switzerland to take up the role as a sectional coach on a Brass course near Basel. The course ran two different bands, an A band and a B band, both of which performed in two concerts at the end of the week in Zurich and Basel. The A band worked on Year of the Dragon by Philip Sparke and Light Fantastic by Paul Lovatt-Cooper. As well as leading rehearsals for both bands' Tuba and Trombone sections, Rory also gave workshops on practice technique and a Trombone Masterclass.

1st Year at RCM

I have just finished my first year at The Royal College of Music. This year I have been fortunate enough to play in the Sinfonietta twice and in the Brass Ensemble on all three projects. I have performed in Pines of Rome on off-stage Trombone and Gotterdammerung and the Rhine Journey on Bass Trumpet. As well as these ensemble performances I have played in masterclasses with John Kenny, Nigel Black, Paul Beniston and Lindsay Shilling on both the Trombone and Euphonium. On Euphonium, I performed Cafe 1930 at the College Open Day in the Britten Theatre. I have been awarded a further Scholarship for my next three years of study.

I have played Euphonium with the RCM resident Brass Band, Zone One Brass. With whom, I won the Euphonium Award in the Championship section of the London and Southern Counties Regional Championships. As well as this, I have played in many other external ensembles, such as the Charities Philharmonia with which I played Janacek Sinfonietta.
